lacyjae: Say No to Slaughterhouses!

The City of Calgary wants to put a Slaughterhouse IN the North-East of Calgary.

This is bad for a number of reasons, and will affect all of Calgary.

The facility will be operating between 4:00 am and midnight six days a week
500 head of cattle with an expected expansion to 1,600 head
Facility will hold 540 animals
25 deliveries of cattle per day in open cattle trailers
10 loads a day of waste removal (animal by products being shipped to Calgary Landfills)

Increased traffic, open cattle containers, landfills FILLED with slaughterhouse waste.

The cloying smell of blood in the air from animals being constantly killed. It'll stick to everything: you, your clothes, your house, your car.

The plant will use over 900,000 litres of water a day that will be returned to the City's sewage system full of blood and other animal by products.  The filtration process that the company has employed will remove the large chunks of animal flesh and hair, but does nothing to eliminate or pre-treat the biohazardous animal blood mixed in the water.

The City is already asking residents to limit their water use.. so let's just use 900,000 litres more a day?

Pickle/olive platter

Juice
Your favorite pie
*soy ice cream will be provided

** - I went to the Valentine's Banquet, which was really cool, but mayonnaise (miracle whip) was used and I'm almost certain some cheeses were.. so I've contacted them regarding whether it IS supposed to be dairy and egg free, or whether they don't really care, so I can promote it as vegetarian or vegan and not be wrong in what I'm promoting it as. There was lots of vegan food though, so if you're vegan don't let it stop you if the whole potluck isn't. ;)

... That's it for now. I'd really like to start a group.. I need to check out CVS because I've never been to any of their things.. But we seem to be fairly young on here, maybe we need a teens/young adults group and start rocking out and being active.

And please check out my forums, it's sorta dead but I'm trying to keep it updated and cool and get people involved! :)

Peace out! :)

Hey All,

Joined this awhile ago, thought I'd post and say hi. I know one of you already, but hi to everyone else!

I've been a vegetarian for most of my life and lived in Calgary for all of it.

Uhm, what's everybody's favourite restaurant in calgary? Just thought I'd get some discussion going... :)

lacyjae: Calgary Veg Forums

I've started a new forum for Calgary and area Veggies.

http://www.lacykitten.com/vego/board/

If you're interested, there's also NewCalgVeg, the new vegetarian group of Calgary.. which has it's own section of the board. You can join that group by sending an email to newcalgveg@shaw.ca

There are various groups and events in Calgary, I'm hoping to get them all on board with this so it ends up a big community board!

Thanks!

poodlepants: introduction!

Hi all,

Just joined this community. Obviously, I'm a vegetarian. In Calgary. I want to do dorky vegetarian things, because I've just never been that type. But really, I just want to be able to eat a meal without onlookers making value judgements (shouldn't I be the one making value judgements about THEIR food??)

Uhm, I'm a student at the U of C and a dog trainer and I work at the SPCA. HI!

newscience: the skyline is two gazes long

Hello community!

I thought I'd post and say hi and introduce myself. My name's Sam, I'm 23, and I've been living in Calgary for a couple of years now. I moved here from the Toronto area and it's taken me a while to get used to Calgary (not because I come from Toronto!), but 2003 was when it finally happened. So, yay Calgary!

I make zines and even a small literary magazine. I reconstruct clothes when I can (I'm a bit too scissors-crazy sometimes). I like tea a lot, and reading, and I don't know what else to say about myself! Heh. I guess I should talk about me & vegetarianism, as that's the point of this community. I've been a successful vegetarian for almost a year now. The first time I went veg was in high school, and there were a couple of times between then and now, and they all failed after a couple of months. But this time I did more research about nutrition, and have started to cook more interesting things, so it's working! Yay!

So I think I've babbled on enough. Hi!
